Sayler Graveyard,
Beaver Dam Road, (Names in Stones (1) say Bunker Hill Rd)
Johnsville, Frederick County, Md.
As compiled by, Charles Isaac Ecker -
August 31, 2002
Isaac A. Sayler has
been very valuable in providing information and help
Daniel Sayler moved to
Frederick County, Md, in the spring of 1727. His wife Anna Sayler, his
youngest son Daniel, his daughters Catharine, Julia and Mary, and Mary’s
husband Bostian Neff. They bought a farm on Beaver Dam Road, Frederick
County, Md. It is located between Union Bridge and Johnsville off of Route
75. Four generations of Saylers are buried there. (2)
Stones in the
Sayler Grave Yard
There are 21 stones set in concrete, in a neat row. Some of the stones may
be ‘foot stones’ as they only have initials on them.
Some time ago,
according to Isaac A. Sayler, who was born in the area, and now (September
2002) lives about 2 miles from the farm with the grave yard, the stones were
moved from time to time. At one time a farmer was using some of them as
weights for his harrow and sculti-packer. A subsequent farmer gathered the
stone, put them in a neat row, close to each other, poured concrete to hold
them in place and put a pipe fence around the area to preserve it. He is
also keeping the weeds down. Isaac A. Sayler goes from time to time to help
weed the plot. My wife Peggy and I went with him about 10 years ago and cut
and pulled weeds and over growth.

Names in Stones(1)
has 11 people buried in the Sayler Grave Yard.. I also assume (that is bad)
that the markers with just the initials are the foot stones. The 2 stones that
are broken (# 5 and # 7) could be Daniel I and his wife, although Names in
Stones (1) does not include Daniel I and his wife Anna as being buried
there, but the History of Sayler Family (2) indicates they are
buried there..
Summary
- However, from personal visits to the burial
plot, with Isaac A. Sayler, from Names in Stones (1), and from
History of Sayler Family (2), I believe that there are 15 people
buried on the family farm. There may be more, there are 21 stones, but I
believe that some of those stones with the initials on them are foot stones. If
each of the markers are grave markers, than there are 22, the two broken stones
would be Daniel Sayler I, and his wife Anna, and then there is one rough stone
marked C.S.. for Christian Sayler, born March 8, 1742, died 1797, and that the
History of Sayler Family (2) says is buried there, but the stone
is missing.
